Dublin is facing a significant challenge: accommodating a massively growing population, where demanding for housing is outstripping supply, while preserving its so called character and infrastructure. As urbanisation accelerates outwards and people are commuting daily in to the city from as far away as Waterford and the border counties, Dublin must decide how to expand. The debate often comes down to two options: building upwards or building outwards. Given Dublin’s geographical, economic, and social constraints, building upwards is the only game in town. People will say “oh what about it’s character?”. Take a walk from Connolly train station to O’Connell street and up the quays that’s not character worth defending.
